From our fellow ukulele player, Scott, of UPOP:
I am going to be teaching my Introduction to Ukulele – Plus at Spokane Community College, located at 1810 N Greene Street, Spokane, WA, beginning on Saturday, April 11th, and including the following two Saturdays April 18th and 25th, a total of 6 hours of instruction (two hour classes from 12:30 to 2:30 each). This class is designed for (ADULT) absolutely beginners or those knowing only a few chords.
Here is a summary of the class from the college ACT 2 newsletter: “Ready to make some music this spring? Join Ukulele player and ACT 2 faculty, Scott Hallett, for Ukulele: Introduction Plus, a fun, beginner‑friendly class designed to get you strumming in just a few sessions. Over three relaxed, hands‑on lessons, you’ll learn the basic chords and techniques that open the door to playing hundreds of familiar songs—no prior musical experience required. Along the way, you’ll pick up tips on caring for your instrument and build confidence through simple, enjoyable practice. A detailed handout is provided, and a limited number of loaner ukuleles are available for those who need one. Ukulele has become one of the most popular and approachable instruments around!”
And a copy of the actual catalog description:
“Ukulele: Introduction Plus
The ukulele has recently made a huge comeback in popularity and is the easiest of all string instruments to learn to play. It is also suitable for all types of music. These three 2-hour classes are designed for absolute beginners (or those that know only a few chords). Our emphasis will be on fun rather than theory and no prior music experience is needed. We will begin with simple, familiar tunes, and spend our time learning a few simple chords that will allow you to play literally hundreds of songs. We will spend time on the care and feeding of your ukulele as well. A 50-page handout will be provided, but you need to have your own ukulele and tuner. I do have a couple of loaner ukuleles and you can email [email protected] to reserve one, if one is still available.”
The cost is only $24 dollars for all three 3 days of instruction and the handouts. They can register for the class by calling SCC Non-Credit Registration at 509-533-8500. And parking is free on Saturdays!
I will also be offering a second class, for the next step in their ukulele journey, called Ukulele, Beyond Beginner. It will begin on Saturday, May 2nd and is similar, in that the class is held at the college on three Saturdays, from 12:30 to 2:20, on May, 2nd, 9th, and 16th. A total of 6 hours of instruction. The class description is:”Ukulele: Beyond BeginnerYou know some beginner ukulele chords and can sing a few songs. What now? Improve your strumming, add new chords to your gig bag, and use simple ukulele music theory to help understand music keys and chords. We will learn the C-scale and see how it is used to play a song melody and simple solos. We will use TAB to play melodies to mix with chords for instrumentals and see how common chord shapes can be moved up-the-neck. We will also do some group singing and discuss practical ways to practice, but our emphasis will always be on having fun.”
Registration is $24 dollars and made the same as above by calling SCC Non-Credit Registration at 509-533-8500
